Less visited than the Périgord, the Ariège offers authentic decorated caves in a mountain setting. This weekend pairs the famous cave of Niaux, where you walk by lamplight to the Salon Noir, with the extraordinary natural tunnel of Mas d'Azil, which a road runs right through. It covers about 70 km and suits May to September.
Day 1
Morning: Niaux
Lamp in hand, you walk 800 m underground to the Salon Noir and its bison drawn in black line 14,000 years ago. Niaux is one of the great decorated caves still open to visitors. Next: 10 minutes by car to Tarascon-sur-Ariège.
Afternoon: Parc de la Préhistoire, Tarascon
An open-air museum space that puts Niaux in context, with workshops, replicas and demonstrations of spear-thrower shooting. Next: 50 minutes by car to Le Mas-d'Azil.
Day 2
Morning: the Mas d'Azil cave
Unique in Europe: an immense archway through which the departmental road passes. The river Arize carved this natural tunnel, which people have used for thousands of years. Next: 5 minutes on foot to the museum.
Afternoon: Mas d'Azil museum
The village museum houses the treasures of the cave, including the famous fawn spear-thrower, a masterpiece of Magdalenian portable art.
Good to know
- Niaux can be visited by reservation only, with a strictly limited number of places each day, so book early.
- The cave is cool and the ground uneven: closed shoes and warm clothing are essential.
- Foix, Tarascon-sur-Ariège and Le Mas-d'Azil have lodging and restaurants.
- Allow plenty of time for travel: the mountain roads are winding.
